How many paragraphs in a 25-mark question?

A strong twenty five mark essay usually contains four main paragraphs plus a conclusion. This structure helps you organise your analysis and evaluation in a balanced way. You can include more or fewer paragraphs depending on your writing style, but using a clear structure makes the essay easier to manage.

The key idea is that your essay must contain balance, depth and clear reasoning. When you break it into manageable pieces, you avoid writing long, unfocused paragraphs. Each paragraph should make one point, explain it carefully and include evaluation.

Introduction - Define the key terms in one short paragraph. Do not include analysis. Keep it clear and simple and contextualise your answer.

 

First argument - Explain one main point using a chain of analysis. Apply it to context and include a diagram if helpful.

First evaluation - Add a short evaluation after the paragraph. Explain what the outcome depends on.

Mini Judgement 1 - Link back to the question and weigh up both sides of the argument and which one is more convincing. This will help you structure your conclusion and shows a clear viewpoint and will help with judgement marks. 

 

Second argument  - Repeat the structure with a different point.

Second evaluation - Show a limitation, stakeholder perspective or condition that affects the outcome.

Mini Judgement 2 - Link back to your second argument and explain logically using chains which argument is more convincing and why. 

 

Third argument (optional)

You can include a third point if it strengthens your answer, but it should be concise.

 

Conclusion

Summarise both sides of the argument and make a final judgement.

What students get wrong

Writing too many points - More paragraphs do not equal more marks. Quality is more important.

Not including evaluation throughout Evaluation should appear after each argument, not only in the conclusion.

Writing long introductions - An introduction should be short. Do not waste time.
